The Senior IC's Guide to Saying No (Without Burning Bridges)

Video Description

Speakers: William Hurley and Kimberly Cabbagestalk

The request is small. The deadline hasn't moved. And the yes is out before the sentence is even finished. That reflex is probably part of what earns a promotion to senior. It's also the thing that quietly wrecks focus, delivery, and a lot of evenings.

This session is about the skill nobody gets trained on: saying no in a way that protects the work and the relationship at the same time. It's aimed at senior individual contributors, the people who can't escalate every hard conversation upward and have to hold the line themselves, often with a client on the other side of the table.

The focus is on the moves that actually work. Saying no to the request while saying yes to the goal. Making tradeoffs visible instead of silently absorbing them, so "yes, and here's what slips" replaces the heroic all-nighter. Pushing back on a shaky technical decision without it reading as ego. Managing up without sounding insubordinate. Declining a client ask without torching the account. And the part most advice skips: picking the battles worth the friction and letting the rest go.

The tradeoffs get an honest look too. No is uncomfortable, it sometimes lands wrong, and some bad "yeses" are inevitable. The goal isn't to become the person who blocks everything. It's to spend hard-won credibility on the things that actually matter, instead of being the bottleneck that says yes to everyone.
